Meningitis Update from Pfizer (June 2016)

Due to the recent meningitis outbreak at Rutgers University (see below*) The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) and Rutgers University have made a MenB vaccine recommendation with support from the CDC, that the following populations receive recommended vaccine series:

  • All incoming, returning and transfer undergraduate students
  • All graduate students who live in undergraduate dormitories, and
  • All graduates students, faculty, and staff who have had medical conditions that put them at increased risk for meningococcal disease, based on the CDC’s definition

*Two undergraduate students at Rutgers University- New Brunswick, New Jersey were diagnosed with invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis, serogroup B (MenB) in March and April 2016. Both students had meningitis and one had bacteremia. Molecular testing performed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that the two isolates from these cases were genetically indistinguishable even though no common link was found between the two students. This suggests that this particular strain is present among the Rutgers University – New Brunswick undergraduate student population.
